Competition entry for a new residential development, Castle Gate, Pretoria, 2023 [UNBUILT]

Approach: 

New developments should be rich in quality and variety. This means encouraging a distinctive response that arises from, and compliments its setting. This applies at every scale – the total region, the immediate surroundings and the specific site. To establish connections, places need to be easily accessible and integrated physically and visually with their surroundings. This requires attention as to how to get around by foot, bicycle, other public transport and the car. To work with the landscape, places must strike a balance between the natural and man-made environment, while utilizing the site’s intrinsic resources – the climate, land form, heritage – to maximize energy and use. By mixing uses and forms, a place meets a variety of demands from a wide range of users and social groups. By providing opportunities to the users, they help weave together different housing typologies and densities. For this district to be successful, it needs to be economically viable, well managed and maintained. This means understanding the considerations of the stakeholders and the end-users. The Site Development Strategy needs to be designed flexible enough to respond to future changes in land use, density, demographics and the lifestyle of the community. This means designing for energy and resource efficiency. This approach to development creates flexibility in the use of property, public space and service infrastructure.
