UNIVERSITY OF MPUMALANGA: STUDENT PAVILIONS
New Pavilions, University of Mpumalanga, Mpumalanga, 2024
The Student Pavilions project at the University of Mpumalanga embodies a unique package of three smaller projects in one, which deal with a very human scale amidst a large site. This project is very specific not only to Campus landscaping, but specifically to the unique climate of the Lowveld region of South Africa. We have aimed to address ecological as well as social needs through the design of the three landscape components to this project.
The site at Pavilion 1 was flagged by us as a hazard to both users and the environment as pedestrians were passing through a steep, rocky slope, often falling and over time, worsening erosion on the slope. Due to the mapping of existing trees and rocky outcrops on the site, we were able to inform the architects on how to place their pavilion structure. The environment also guided our approach to suspend the staircase over rocky portions, thus enabling plants to re-establish throughout the site and avoiding the need to break through rock.
Throughout Pavilion 2 and 3, we aimed to incorporate planting that was unique to the Lowveld region as far as possible. The hard landscape materials chosen, remained consistent throughout the three sections of the project, and tied in with the greater Campus material palette.
We have noted the benefit of this project over time, as students, staff and visitors on the campus have found safe spaces to rest, gather and recharge. Drinking fountains provide refreshment and shaded seating allow for moments of pause. The newly established vegetation has thrived over time, and provides seasonal interest, and aids to the overall biodiversity of the site through indigenous planting.
