UNIVERSITY OF MPUMALANGA: MEMORIAL GARDEN
We (kwpCREATE) aimed to preserve as much of the original design and meaning as possible, carefully integrating newly built elements such as walkways and steps into the existing retaining walls, preserving the wall murals and the few existing trees that remained. We preserved the layout of the original water feature however re-purposed it in terms of functionality, to an operational water feature.
Symbolic elements were used in both hard and soft landscaping, such as the ’10 year’ footstep pavers to the wall plaques, as well as the Strelitzia reginae ‘Mandela’s Gold’ entrance plants, which celebrate the new South Africa through recognizing a prominent figure such as Nelson Mandela.
We believe the outcome of the restored memorial garden celebrates the uniqueness of a new South African University such as the University of Mpumalanga.
